As promised, here is my conversation with Professor Mehran Kamrava. It is a broad ranging discussion about the current situation and our respective assessments about the prospect for war. Iran does not want a war with the West, but it may be beyond their control. But this is no longer a case of Iran vs the West and Israel. Russia and China, along with the Organization of Islamic Countries, are supporting Iran’s position that it has been the victim of an illegal attack by Israel and, under Article 51 of the United Nations charter, has the right to act in its self-defense. In addition to the moral support from the Islamic countries, Iran also has military and intelligence support from Russia.

I believe that Russia is advising Iran to respond in a proportional manner to the Israeli assassination of Hamas Politburo Chief, Ismail Haniyeh. I also believe that Israel, regardless of the limited scope of an Iranian attack, will respond in force and ignite a broader war, which will include military operations by the West. Boy, I hope I am wrong, but the odds of this getting bigger and bloodier is quite high in my estimation..........more........
