Russia and China are busy trying to erect a new security architecture in the Persian Gulf, which includes Turkiye, that will push the US out of the Persian Gulf and leave the issue of security to Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. First, the Saudi position has evolved more than is generally appreciated. Riyadh was initially more open to a strike on Iran, but that stance has shifted sharply as the war has unfolded. The combination of Iran’s demonstrated ability to hit Saudi bases and infrastructure with missiles, and the visible presence of Pakistani troops and specialized personnel on Saudi soil, has pushed the Saudis toward a “defend the kingdom, avoid being the launchpad” posture. Pakistani units, including specialized air and air‑defense elements and military aircraft, are now operating on Saudi bases with a mandate that is clearly defensive. That gives the Saudis both political cover and operational capacity to say to Washington: we will prioritize the protection of our territory and regime, but we are not signing up to be the primary platform for a prolonged American air war against Iran.
In that context, two quiet developments are worth factoring into the picture. High‑level U.S. envoys have been moving through Islamabad carrying messages for Tehran, which suggests Washington is using Pakistan as an indirect channel to cool things down rather than prepare the ground for a full‑scale resumption of the war. On the nuclear track, Iran has shown some flexibility on enrichment parameters, but is holding a hard line on the fate of enriched stock: it is prepared to transfer some material to Russia, while firmly resisting any arrangement that would give Washington the kind of intrusive leverage it wants over its uranium inventory. About 50 years ago, gas became scarce and expensive. Average people found – very suddenly – they could no longer afford to drive the huge, V8-powered cars that were once the typical car driven by average Americans. If you weren’t there to see it, you might not believe it. Try to imagine a world in which owning a car larger – much larger – than a current Mercedes S-Class that had a V8 much larger than the little six the current S-Class comes standard with – was not just possible for working class Americans but also common. Just as it was common, once, for working class people to live in single family homes.
They – the large cars – were everywhere. It was a world in which the guy in the Mercedes just had a more expensive car – as opposed to the world today, in which every car is expensive.
Anyhow, what happened to the large cars that were once as common as sneakers, almost? Well, gas got scarce and expensive. There were gas lines – and gas shortages. Those large cars with their big V8s got maybe 15 MPG – so the need for expensive gas was constant as well as expensive. It very quickly became too expensive for working and middle class Americans to afford to drive their large cars and so they traded them in for smaller cars – typically imports from Japan. The traded-in large cars sat on used car lots; it was very difficult to sell them at any price because no matter how cheaply they could be bought, there was no getting around what it cost to fuel them. The new car market for large cars with V8s collapsed. This happened very quickly and the change in the new car landscape from circa 1974 to circa 1984 was dramatic. By the early ’80s, there were just a relative handful of large cars with V8s that were mass-market cars. Most had been replaced by much smaller cars with V6 and even four cylinder engines. As far as I can tell, Donald Trump is the first American president in my lifetime to be actively engaged in business while serving as President of the United States. I have no memory of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, or George W. Bush starting and running businesses while occupying the Oval Office. It is true that Lincoln was a known agent of the railroads and that Grant’s administration was corrupt, as other 19th century administrations might have been when the creation of a new nation offered so much to plunder to those with power.
I doubt presidents and their administrations can avoid doing favors for campaign donors and friends, and these favors little doubt bring gratuities when the president and his appointees are out of office. Clinton and Biden were perhaps the first truly corrupt American presidents in my lifetime. It was perhaps Clinton who “legitimized” selling influence. This practice took off in the Biden regime as so much evidence shows. The practice has been legally legitimized by the failure of the Trump regime to prosecute despite the evidence on Hunter Biden’s laptop, evidence we no longer hear about.
As President Trump has seemingly escalated the practice of using the Oval Office for personal enrichment, prosecuting past offenders would be self-indicting. We can expect Biden and his son to walk free.
