The government will also remove requirements that councils demonstrate matters such as anti-social behavior or community support before seeking an order. They call this bringing empty homes “back into use.” I call it another erosion of the basic principle that private property belongs to the person who paid for it.
Let us be precise because the government is not technically confiscating ownership of the house. Under an EDMO, the title remains with the owner, and there are exemptions, including where the property is normally someone’s primary residence and that person is temporarily absent. But the state can take over management of a qualifying privately owned property and put it back into occupation. Between rising domestic demand, heavy export commitments and refineries running near their limit, the U.S. is drawing down its own stocks, not sitting on a surplus. And as Karl W. Miller shows in his latest assessment, dated September 29, the shock from the Gulf hits the world’s fuel supply twice: it starves refineries abroad of crude and removes finished fuel from the Gulf’s own refineries. America has no spare diesel to offer a world that has lost 1.6 million barrels a day of diesel exports from the Gulf and Russia combined. Until finished-fuel supply recovers, the gap will be closed by higher prices, less economic activity, or both.

Miller’s September 29 assessment explains why the diesel shortage is worse than crude figures alone suggest. The Gulf shock hits world fuel supply through two separate channels at once.
The first is feedstock. When Gulf crude exports are disrupted, refineries in Asia, Europe and Africa lose the barrels they were set up to run. Replacement crudes can work, but not necessarily at the same yield, throughput or cost, because refinery units and hydrogen supply are configured around particular crudes. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who has introduced legislation that would dissolve ICE over 12 months and then create a commission to recommend how its functions should be handled, Ramirez’s Reimagining Safety Act dismantles the entire Department of Homeland Security, ending some functions entirely and moving others to different departments.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and customs functions would be placed in the newly established Department of Community Safety, while the Transportation Security Administration and Coast Guard would go to the Transportation Department. ICE and Customs and Border Protection would be eliminated. Aside from moving customs enforcement to the new Department of Community Safety, none of the functions performed by ICE or CBP would any longer be performed by the federal government. All of the money appropriated for ICE and CBP would be redirected to social services.

What is Supply-side economics? There are various ways, if speaking to economists, to introduce Supply-side economics.
One is that Supply-side economics introduces the second blade of the scissors into macroeconomics that the famous British economist Alfred Marshall introduced into microeconomics. In Marshall’s time, economists argued whether price was determined by the cost of production or by what people were willing to pay. That is, by supply or by demand. Marshall said the argument was like arguing which blade of the scissors cuts the paper. Price was determined by supply and demand.
In Keynesian macroeconomics, the demand management policy of the post World War II era, there was no second blade of the scissors. There was only the demand blade. The manipulation of aggregate demand was used to control inflation and unemployment. Aggregate demand consisted of consumer demand, government spending, and investment. Investment demand played no real role, because “the reason companies produce is that consumers buy.” Investment was a response to demand.
Fiscal policy was the means Keynesian policymakers used to control inflation and unemployment. If unemployment was the problem, government could cut taxes, thereby giving taxpayers more money to spend, or government could overspend its revenues by running a deficit which would raise government demand. Keynesian economists maintained that the government spending multiplier was larger than the tax cut multiplier. In keeping with their view, aggregate demand was increased by government running a larger deficit by which it overspent its revenues. For years, Washington proclaimed that sanctions would shut down Iranian oil exports. They never did. Iran adapted because markets ALWAYS adapt. Tehran assembled a shadow fleet, tankers switched off transponders, cargoes changed identities, oil moved ship to ship, and payments bypassed Western banking channels while China continued buying the crude. Even during Trump’s maximum-pressure campaign in 2019 and 2020, Iranian oil continued passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Washington could sanction the paperwork, banks, insurance companies, and ships, but somebody still wanted the oil. The blockade has changed everything because you cannot hide geography.
Reuters reports that Iran went roughly seven weeks without meaningful crude exports passing through Hormuz. Iranian crude and condensate loadings collapsed from roughly 2 MILLION barrels per day in March to 740,000 in July and merely 220,000 to 255,000 barrels per day in August. This is the fundamental difference between sanctions and a blockade. Sanctions tell someone they cannot conduct a transaction, so markets find another currency, bank, company, flag, or jurisdiction. A blockade says the tanker cannot leave. You can rename the vessel twelve times and create twenty shell corporations, but eventually that ship still has to sail through the water.
