Army generals appearing on television to demand the resignation and arrest of an elected civilian head of state seems like a textbook example of a coup. And yet that is certainly not how corporate media are presenting the weekend’s events in Bolivia.

No establishment outlet framed the action as a coup; instead, President Evo Morales “resigned” (ABC News, 11/10/19), amid widespread “protests” (CBS News, 11/10/19) from an “infuriated population” (New York Times, 11/10/19) angry at the “election fraud” (Fox News, 11/10/19) of the “full-blown dictatorship” (Miami Herald, 11/9/19). When the word “coup” is used at all, it comes only as an accusation from Morales or another official from his government, which corporate media have been demonizing since his election in 2006 (FAIR.org, 5/6/09, 8/1/12, 4/11/19).

The New York Times (11/10/19) did not hide its approval at events, presenting Morales as a power-hungry despot who had finally “lost his grip on power,” claiming he was “besieged by protests” and “abandoned by allies” like the security services. His authoritarian tendencies, the news article claimed, “worried critics and many supporters for years,” and allowed one source to claim that his overthrow marked “the end of tyranny” for Bolivia. With an apparent nod to balance, it did note that Morales “admitted no wrongdoing” and claimed he was a “victim of a coup.” By that point, however, the well had been thoroughly poisoned.

CNN (11/10/19) dismissed the results of the recent election, where Bolivia gave Morales another term in office, as beset with “accusations of election fraud,” presenting them as a farce where “Morales declared himself the winner.” Time’s report (11/10/19) presented the catalyst for his “resignation” as “protests” and “fraud allegations,” rather than being forced at gunpoint by the military. Suppose people are talking about Medicare for All which some call Single Payer and you want a short but powerful counter argument. Try this:

If you take five annual flu shots, your chances of getting Early Onset Alzheimer’s just went up 1,000 %.

Let the Democrat candidates prove to us that Medicare for all or Single Payer or NHS will improve our health. Let them first pass a law letting students in grade schools and employees at hospitals opt out of required annual flu shots.

MSG in ten different foods a day tricks us into believing we did not get enough to eat. Why not pass a law requiring MSG  food labeling? Reducing weight will lower the cost of healthcare no matter what system of payment we use. And how about passing a law to take Bisphenol out of the lining in canned food? It is known to cause cancer? Passing a law to save millions of Americans from getting cancer will reduce healthcare costs.

But politicians could care less about your health.

In the latest outrage four black Eritreans forced a 13 year old Swedish girl into a bathroom and took turns raping her while filming the gang rape. Deportation means no prison time for gang raping and recording the rape which under Swedish law is a clear felony as a “child pornography offense.” Prison time would be too much to impose on the poor underprivileged misunderstood black men from Eritrea who came to Sweden searching for a new life. Oh, the poor dears. I can hear the feminist Swedish government crying over the poor dears and blaming the Swedish girl for the rape.

Notice also that the news report describes the gang rapists as “defendants” and not as perpetrators, and that the raped victim is merely a plaintiff, not a victim. This is the way it is in Sweden. There has been a military coup in Bolivia backed by violent right-wing  rioters and the US government, but you’d hardly know this from any of the mainstream media headlines.

So there you have it. The indigenous leader of a socialist South American government which has successfully lifted masses of people out of crushing poverty, which happens to control the world’s largest reserves of lithium (which may one day replace oil as a crucial energy resource due to its use in powering smartphones, laptops, hybrid and electric cars), which has an extensive and well-documented history of being targeted for regime change by the US government, simply stepped down due to some sort of scandal involving a “disputed election”. Nothing to do with the fact that right-wing mobs had been terrorizing this leader’s family, or the fact that the nation’s military literally commanded him to step down and are now currently searching for him to arrest him, leading to ousted government officials being rounded up and held captive by soldiers wearing masks.
