The title of this article is a question worth asking. The Biden administration’s decision giving permission to Ukraine to fire ATACMs into Russian territory, despite clear warnings from Putin that this would be considered as a US attack on Russia, raises the legitimate question, “What the hell are they trying to do?”

Unnamed Biden officials admitted to the New York Times earlier this week that the ATACMs would not alter the course of the war. In other words, it is a useless tactical measure. Ditto for strategic effect. The US does not have enough ATACMs in inventory to inflict significant damage on Russian military or economic infrastructure. So what is the purpose? Score a PR victory for Ukraine? Exonerate Biden of any claim that he did not do everything in his power to help Ukraine? Or, is it something darker and more nefarious?

Let’s go thru the timeline. Biden sent long-range ATACMS last April, i.e. seven months ago:

The US delivered long-range missiles to Ukraine earlier this month that the Biden administration had previously refused to send following a directive from President Joe Biden, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

Biden secretly approved the transfer of the long-range ATACMS missiles in February for use inside Ukrainian territory. The ATACMS missiles were then quietly included in the $300 million aid package announced on March 12 and ultimately delivered to Ukraine earlier this month, according to Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col.
