(Common Dreams) Advocates for mental health and unhoused people blasted U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday over his executive order titled "Ending Crime and Disorder on America's Streets."

Trump's order directs U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to end policies that restrict the government from institutionalizing "individuals on the streets who are a risk to themselves or others." She must also work with other Cabinet members "to prioritize grants for states and municipalities that enforce prohibitions on open illicit drug use, urban camping and loitering, and urban squatting, and track the location of sex offenders."

As a White House fact sheet highlights, the order also "redirects funding to ensure that individuals camping on streets and causing public disorder and that are suffering from serious mental illness or addiction are moved into treatment centers, assisted outpatient treatment, or other facilities." Further, it ensures grant money does not "fund drug injection sites or illicit drug use."

In a statement to USA Today, which first reported on the executive action, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that "by removing vagrant criminals from our streets and redirecting resources toward substance abuse programs, the Trump administration will ensure that Americans feel safe in their own communities and that individuals suffering from addiction or mental health struggles are able to get the help they need."

Meanwhile, National Coalition for the Homeless executive director Donald Whitehead Jr. declared that "everyone deserves a safe place to live."

Trump's policies, he said, "ignore decades of evidence-based housing and support services in practice. They represent a punitive approach that has consistently failed to resolve homelessness and instead exacerbates the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals.".........more........

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday told U.S. President Donald Trump to remember that Moscow possessed Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort after Trump told Medvedev to “watch his words”.

Trump, in a post on his Truth social network in the early hours of Thursday, singled out Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, for sharp criticism after Medvedev said that Trump’s threat of hitting Russia and buyers of its oil with punitive tariffs was “a game of ultimatums” and a step closer towards a war between Russia and the United States.

“Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!,” Trump wrote, in his second warning to the close ally of President Vladimir Putin in recent weeks.

Trump on July 29 said Russia had “10 days from today” to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or be hit, along with its oil buyers, with tariffs. Some months ago, I pointed out that a benefit of Preacher Johnnie Moore’s taxpayer-funded defense firm, the Orwellian labeled Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, had one benefit and one benefit only.  It would allow its American employees, former soldiers in many cases, to be on the ground in Gaza seeing what the US is faithfully funding, and what Israel has done and is doing.

Israel, with the active support and blessing of over 80% of Israelis since late 2023, has been violently destroying Gazan structures, food and water systems, education, healthcare, along with many of the 2.3 million Palestinians who had created a culture and an economy – in spite of decades of periodic attacks, and the occupying state’s military domination and constantly evolving restrictions on trade, travel and movement.  In spite of this, and perhaps shocking to many Zionists, Gaza has survived and thus far, resisted its intended demise.
