In a rare interview Jon Stewart skewered the military-industrial complex and Washington policymakers behind the last two decades of failed wars in the Middle East.
The well-known comedian pressed former US Army General and CIA Director David Petraeus in particular on the fact that repeat failures, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, have only led to the Pentagon receiving a "raise".
"It looks to me like we lost 20 years in Afghanistan, 20 years in Iraq, and the Pentagon got a raise," Stewart said on “The Problem with Jon Stewart."
Petraeus while on the defensive admitted that the decades of 'nation-building' in the Middle East "tempered enthusiasm" among the population for interventionist action abroad.
But Stewart pressed him further on the constant record-breaking defense budgets of the past years and this year's.
"They got 50 billion more dollars than they even asked for," he said in reference to the Defense Department getting approved for an additional $58 billion beyond what it even requested.
Petraeus then claimed it is all necessary due to "a return of great power rivalries and the need to transform the force" - an particularly China. "Look, if we don’t do it, someone else will," Petraeus said.

Energy expert Alex Epstein testified before the Congressional Strategic Petroleum Reserve hearing this week on Capitol Hill.
As the hearing was starting Democrat Squad member Cori Bush accused Alex Epstein of being a racist for his views supporting the Western tradition of individual rights and capitalism. She was referencing an article he wrote in college in 2002 for her racist attack on Epstein.
Alex Epstein immediately shot back at Bush when he was given the floor and it was delicious.
If Cori Bush had the intellectual heft to understand his arguments she would have been embarrassed.
Alex Epstein: Thanks for giving a moment to address a truly despicable and false attack on me claiming anything I’ve ever said is white supremacist and then try to imply that somehow applies today,” Epstein said. “What I argued for my entire adult life is that Western culture is superior in the sense that it promotes individualism and freedom. And I have fought my entire life for freedom around the world including in Africa, including in Asia, including in India.”
“There are different places around the world that are in many ways inferior,” Epstein continued. “They have female genital mutilation, they have slavery. These are not as good as not mutilating females’ gentiles and not enslaving people. So I make no apology. The idea that this is associated with skin color is despicable and racist. Skin color has nothing to do with ideas. Where you came from geographically is irrelevant. What’s relevant is what’s true. That was an insane diversion from the truth.”.........more.........
racism is a shotgun accusation when what we really need is to realize more exists than meets the eye;
For forty-five years (1964 to 2009), the United States experienced significant progress in race relations. Thanks to the efforts of individual citizens in their communities throughout all regions of the country, this nation was well on its way to racial healing. In 2008 only 18% of Americans were greatly concerned or worried about the state of race relations in the country as nearly 70% thought that relations between Whites and Blacks were very or somewhat good.
In 2009, the most divisive and societally destructive president in American history, Barack Obama, came into office determined to reverse this trend by manipulating the Black citizenry into abandoning racial harmony by utilizing malicious demonization of the White population. He succeeded in fanning the dying embers of racism into a potential national conflagration.
Thanks to Obama and the media’s incessant drumbeat that so-called “white supremacy” is a major threat to minorities, in particular Blacks, a Washington Post poll in May of 2022 revealed that three quarters of Blacks are worried that they or someone they love will be attacked by a white person — while the reality is that Blacks perpetrate the vast majority of interracial crime. And nearly as many, 70 percent, believe that half or more of all White people “hold white supremacist beliefs.”
A Rasmussen poll taken in February of 2023, exposed the inevitable and disturbing reality that only 54% of Blacks think it’s ok to be White. Race based hatred and discrimination now appears to pervade the bulk of the Black population. This same mindset is also pervasive within far too many of the nation’s private and government institutions.......more........
