 Almost exactly a year ago, we reported on the procession of nation states recognising  the independent state of Palestine.

In the space 48 hours last September, the governments of France, San Marino, Luxembourg, Monaco, Andorra, Malta, the UK, Canada, Portugal and Australia have all announced their recognition of the State of Palestine.

It was the greatest number of countries to recognise Palestine in the same year since 1988, and they all did it the same weekend.

Two days later we updated the story, noting the increased talk of Israel’s “isolation” on the world stage. Noting that even the United States was offering only qualified support for Israel, and even opposed both its bombing of Qatar and settling the West Bank.

Here we are a year later, and we can see a similar pattern emerging.

Yesterday, the UK, France and Canada – alongside nine other countries – announced sweeping joint-sanctions, boycotting any goods produced on illegally occupied Palestinian land in the West Bank.

In his comments to Parliament and in interviews with the media, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband referred to the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians, and called the boycott “the beginning of a new approach” which “not only calls out injustice and suffering but acts”.

Israel responded by ordering the closure the British consulate in Jerusalem.

His latest nonsensical statements include a promise that the Iran war will end “after the midterm elections,” and that he will pay every adult in America $5,000 if the Republicans win the midterms. He also said this week that when the Iran war ends, gasoline prices in America, now sitting at record highs of $4.28 a gallon on average, will plummet to $2.00 a gallon.

Rather than anything based on sound policy or wise strategy, this sounds like a series of childish bribes. Vote for my guys in November and I’ll do everything I’ve been unable or unwilling to do my first two years in office.

Investigators discovered the reported racket through WhatsApp messages between former senior United States Citizenship and Immigration Services officer Lukman Owolabi Ganiyu, his financial accomplice Adeniyi Akeem Somoye, and individual citizenship applicants.

The pair, located in Texas, bypassed standard procedures by funneling bribe-paying applicants directly to Ganiyu — skipping key steps in the immigration process like criminal background checks, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas.

Ganiyu rigged the USCIS system to seize control of applications, fast-tracking them for a payout, prosecutors said.

The senior official allegedly fast-tracked citizenship for his alleged partner in crime, Somoye, then green-lit residency for Somoye’s wife and child.

Ganiyu hijacked the system to snatch files from field offices in Minneapolis, Charlotte, and Houston — avoiding local supervisors to rubber-stamp the applications himself, according to the US attorney’s office.

As Americans turn against artificial intelligence, AI companies are building programs to surveil and identify troublemakers in advance.

An investigative report published this week by The American Prospect revealed that, “in addition to monitoring activists in the vicinity of Anthropic executives and keeping tabs on protests near physical Anthropic assets, the firm is also implementing a ‘pre-crime’ approach, attempting to predict incidents before they happen. In some cases, that also means reporting suspects to police before a crime occurs.”

An Anthropic security official said during a podcast that the goal is to transform operations “from reactive information to gathering proactive and predictive and preventative threat engagement and management.”

The Prospect garnered its findings by reading through job postings, talking to senior security officials at Anthropic, and listening to interviews with company officials.  

A Response to Growing Threats?

Anthropic frames its emerging surveillance and predictive programs as necessary responses to growing threats, and the Prospect report includes several examples of threats or concerning incidents involving Anthropic representatives. For example, last month, local media reported that Anthropic called the police on a man who told Claude that he bought an AR-15 and “had CEO Dario Amodei ‘in his sights.'”

Interestingly, while Anthropic was quick to call the cops, the company also refused to show police the messages. “In short, Anthropic reported a user for in-platform speech, and then refused to provide police with evidence of actual wrongdoing,” the Prospect pointed out.......more...........

It has been pointed out that human interaction has been replaced by an app, a code, a portal that a large percentage of the population finds frustrating and inconvenient, especially for older people who did not grow up with the isolating and often difficult to use technology.  The people who crammed this technology down our throats in order that they could make more money praise the “innovation.”  But in fact it is a technology that isolates people and takes control away from them.

And brings failure.  Not a week passes, and sometimes not a day, that I don’t experience the time-consuming failure of the digital systems to work.  Why they fail so often I don’t know.  Perhaps they are poorly thought out and will improve with time.  Perhaps the instability in digital systems is due to the insecurity of the Internet, which requires more and more layers of security hoops to jump through in order to make a connection. One result is security system  incompatibilities that result in dysfunction.  Perhaps use is rising faster than the systems can accommodate.  I think the only reason there has not been a generalized breakdown is that there are some elements left of the analogue system that, with effort, can still be contacted to bypass or correct the dysfunctioning digital system..........more.........
