 fewer mexicans are sending money back home it seems;

A few datapoints to keep on a post-it note as things progress; starting with a rather significant new release that I think you will find interesting.

Approximately 12.3 million Mexicans live abroad, both legally and illegally, with 97% of them living and working in the United States, according to BBVA Research.  Last year Mexicans living abroad sent $64.75 billion back home in remittances, largely from Texas and California to states in central and western Mexico.

According to data just released, in April of this year remittances back to Mexico dropped 12.1%.  The Mexico central bank said April saw 8.1% fewer transactions than a year earlier, that’s down to 12.4 million transactions. For Mexico this could be a devastating trend.  [Sidenote: Remember, Trump is likely planning a complete overhaul of the USMCA later this year.]

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Remittances sent to Mexico slumped 12.1% in April compared to a year earlier, according to central bank data published on Monday, marking the steepest drop in over a decade as U.S. lawmakers mull a tax on such payments sent abroad........more..........

 here we have a bit of curious exchanges called 'peace talks';

Last week Ukraine presented President Donald Trump with their “term sheets,” what they require in order to accept a ceasefire.  Today in Istanbul, Turkey, the Russian Federation presented the Ukraine delegation, and likely a transmission to the White House, with the Russian “term sheets.”

This further clarifies the content of the significant meetings this afternoon in the White House, where President Trump assembled his “military leadership” and likely foreign policy team.

Vladimir Medinsky, the head of the Russian delegation at the talks in Istanbul, said Russia is offering Kyiv a temporary ceasefire. Medinsky said that Russia has prepared a two-part “memorandum” proposing a ceasefire and ending the war it started. The second part of the “memorandum” provides for “variability” and “several paths”, he said.

Here are the two primary parts of the Russian terms:  Section 1 “Settlement of Crisis”, and Section 2 “Terms for Ceasefire”.......more.......

 larry isn't optimistic on the chances for a deal;

The editor at the New York Post, who signed off on this headline, or came up with it himself, either displayed a profound ignorance of history or was making a snarky observation about Ukraine’s lack of strategic thinking. I think it is the former, but I welcome your thoughts about the latter.

The Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 was intended to destroy the US aircraft carriers berthed at Pearl Harbor. But those ships were not there… they were at sea. Instead, the Japanese decimated and damaged several battleships. This attack launched the United States into World War II. I will defer discussing whether President Roosevelt allowed this attack to take place in order to rally the American public to join the war in Europe.

Japanese Admiral Yamamoto reportedly said the following in the aftermath of Japan’s great victory:

I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve….We have won a great tactical victory at Pearl Harbor and thereby lost the war.

Ukraine’s destruction of an estimated 10 aircraft of varying vintage changes nothing tactically or strategically to give Ukraine hopes of stopping the Russian offensive on the ground. All it did was enrage the Russian public and further their commitment to defeating Ukraine and NATO. The Russian leadership has played this surprisingly cool. The Russian negotiators met their Ukrainian counterparts in Istanbul on Monday and did not raise the attacks as an issue in the talks..........more..........

 war will be the result if the trump keeps insisting on no enrichment for iran who says they will not give up their rights;

President Trump on Monday contradicted a report from Axios that said the US had delivered a proposal to Iran that would allow Tehran to enrich uranium at a low level for its civilian nuclear program.

“The AUTOPEN should have stopped Iran a long time ago from ‘enriching,'” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM!”

Other US officials have been publicly demanding that Iran eliminate its enrichment program altogether, a condition Tehran has made clear is a non-starter. But the Axios report said the US is showing flexibility on the issue.

Sources told Axios that the offer put forward by US envoy Steve Witkoff describes “preliminary ideas” to be discussed in the next round of negotiations.

Under the outline, Iran would not be allowed to build any new enrichment facilities and must “dismantle critical infrastructure for conversion and processing of uranium.” Iran would also have to halt new research and development on centrifuges and would not be able to develop enrichment capabilities beyond those necessary for civilian purposes.

Once the agreement is signed, Iran would have to limit its uranium enrichment to 3% for an undetermined period of time. The 2015 nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA, capped Iranian nuclear enrichment at 3.67%..........more.......

 it seems that a solution to the palestinian war is beyond immediate reach;

This has been the bottom line for resistance factions all along, who have consistently said they are willing to release all Israelis still in Gaza immediately, in one go, on condition of a permanent end to the war and an end to the deliberate starvation and siege on their people.

Even though US officials have at times signaled acceptance of those terms, Israel has consistently refused, wanting only temporary truces so it can retrieve its prisoners, only to resume the genocide at will.

Hamas has shown flexibility by agreeing formulas that preserve these basic principles while allowing the US and Israel to say that the deal does not include – at least initially – a permanent end to the Israeli assault.

According to its latest counterproposal, as Drop Site News reported, Hamas wants “a guarantee that as long as Palestinian resistance forces hold their fire, negotiations for a complete end to the genocide will continue beyond a 60-day initial truce and that this would be guaranteed by the US, Egypt and Qatar.”

This would be accompanied by an immediate resumption of aid deliveries, according to the terms of the US-brokered January ceasefire that Israel shattered in March........more..........

 pcr doesn't understand the putin hesitancy to fight this ukie war;

The latest news on the war front serves to introduce today’s column.

The Ever-Widening War

With Putin focused on useless “peace talks,” Ukraine (or Washington or NATO) attacked four Russian Air Force bases and destroyed a number of strategic Russian bombers. The BBC reports:

“In an operation said to have taken 18 months to prepare, scores of small drones were smuggled into Russia, stored in special compartments aboard freight trucks, driven to at least four separate locations, thousands of miles apart, and launched remotely towards nearby airbases.”  https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0r1jv0rn0ko

If this is true, Russia’s strategic nuclear forces were attacked from inside Russia.  This seems to be a massive failure of Russian intelligence.

Curiously, the Russian English language sites, RT and Sputnik, have little to say this morning about the successful attack that Ukraine claims destroyed one-third of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet.  Instead, the news services babble on about the second round of peace talks.

There are also Russian news reports that two bridges inside Russia were blown up resulting in deaths and injuries.  https://sputnikglobe.com/20250601/bridge-collapses-disrupt-rail-traffic-in-russias-bryansk–kursk-regions-seven-dead-and-66-injured-1122163963.html

It seems that Putin still does not realize that Russia is at war..........more......
