Keir Starmer has set out a government agenda that he will claim can counter the “snake oil charm of populism”, in a king’s speech pledging change to people’s lives including rights at work, cheaper energy and secure housing.

Starmer said the “fight for trust is the battle that defines our political era”, and said the king’s speech – the first under a Labour government for 15 years – would end the performative and divisive politics of the last years and counter the rise of the populist hard right.

The king’s speech sets out 40 bills, including many focused on economic growth – such as the planning and infrastructure bill, which will give the government new top-down powers on building key infrastructure faster.

The employment rights bill, which is the start of implementing the “new deal for working people”, has been promised to take effect within 100 days. It will ban zero-hours contracts unless an employee requests one, and most “fire and rehire” practices – although unions have complained that some aspects have been watered down after lobbying from business.

It will grant workers rights such as maternity pay and sick pay from day one of their employment, making flexible working the default, and simplify the process of trade union recognition.

Another expected early bill will be the nationalisation of rail companies, designed to bring the franchises back into public ownership as the contracts expire, and a better buses bill to give new franchising rights to local leaders. This will grant them powers over bus routes and timetables, taking these back from private companies.

Several bills are designed to highlight useful political causes, such as the economic responsibility bill enshrining a duty to consult the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) before making major tax changes. This could particularly injure the Conservatives as it was a key criticism of Liz Truss’ disastrous mini-budget, which did not include an OBR forecast. “How many more children are going to die on our streets, Prime Minister?” This comment, shouted at Keir Starmer on Tuesday as he lay flowers for the three murdered girls in Southport, summed up the mood of a nation: both the visceral horror of the attack itself, and the public fear and alarm at the lawlessness that seems in recent weeks to have gripped the whole country. As the cameras flashed and the heckling grew, the man who wants to end politics, to insulate himself and his Government in quangos, committees and fiscal rules, found himself in a traditional political encounter. Something has gone horribly wrong. People are furious. And Starmer is the leader of the country: what is he going to do about it?

Their cries, predictably, fell on deaf ears. Right from the off, Labour’s response to public anger over the Southport tragedy has been tone-deaf and contemptuous. Consider the optics of that flower-laying itself. Starmer ended up with his back to the assembled locals. At no point did he deign to address them – indeed, he did not so much as look at them. He was flanked throughout by several security guards and the flowers had scarcely hit the ground before he was whisked away to his car, prompting shouts of “You’ve got your photo, off you go” and “Go away!” The visit, from the man who claimed on taking office he would end the “era of politics as performance”, lasted barely two minutes. Reading the room has of course never been Starmer’s strong suit – think of his brittle, tetchy response to a studio audience laughing at his thousandth repeat of the “son of a tool-maker” line. But the contrast with earlier PMs is stark. Tony Blair, David Cameron, Boris Johnson – all would surely have understood instinctively what was required of them and given a sombre, unifying speech...........more.........

A Tory policing chief has suggested that “mass uncontrolled immigration” is one of the reasons behind rioting which has spread across the UK.

In a statement Donna Jones, the police and crime commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, compared the riots over the last week to a “rebellion to illegal immigration”.

The Conservative politician said that while not justifying any violence she had spoken to people from “both sides of the spectrum” and claimed there was value in “understanding the views of those attending rallies who feel strongly but don’t cause disorder”.

On Saturday, there were violent confrontations in Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, Blackpool and Belfast and more than 90 arrests were made.

Police officers were attacked and forced to draw their batons as they came under fire from bricks, bottles and flares.

The riots have been sparked by the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport on Monday.

On Saturday evening, as violence surged across the country, Ms Jones, who claims to be the UK’s most senior police commissioner, released a statement which appeared to justify some of the activities........more........

Putting some context data together before a video that should concern everyone.

Representative Jamie Raskin’s (U-MD) son, Tommy Raskin killed himself right after the 2020 election at the age of 25.  Congressman Raskin was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Raskin is an angry bitter man of intemperate disposition, the archetype nihilist.  As hate consumes him, his physical persona changes with the manifestation of evil enterprise.  While his cancer is in reported remission, I would anticipate it to resurface in early 2025, after Baal has finished using him.

Jeremy Clarkson has urged Sir Keir Starmer and media outlets like the BBC to “calm down” with the “rhetoric” that those protesting up and down the country at the moment are all “far-right”.

In the past week, violence has erupted across Britain as police have clashed with demonstrators, sparked by the horrific murders of three young girls in Southport in July.

Hundreds of arrests have been carried out as a result after mosques and hotels harbouring asylum seekers were targeted by mobs.

The Government has since announced greater protection for mosques with new emergency security that can be rapidly deployed to ensure police can apprehend offenders promptly.

This past weekend, violence ensued in towns and cities such as Hull, Liverpool, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool and Belfast which resulted in several police officers being injured.

The Prime Minister has branded the scenes as “far-right thuggery” but several of those taking part in the demonstrations without turning to violence have taken issue with his labelling.

Clarkson hasn’t been involved in the protests but in his latest column for The Sun, he hinted that he sympathised with friends and people around him who fear they’ll be slapped with a “racist thug” tag if they air concerns over immigration amid the riots.

“Today, I’m surrounded by farmers and plasterers and brickies and butchers and all I hear, all day long, is that there’s too much immigration,” Clarkson penned.

“But if they say this out loud, or if they go on a march, they are told by the London elite that they are far-right extremists or racist thugs. For the most part, they’re not........more......

US Intelligence agencies reportedly predicted that Iran would launch its reprisal attacks on Monday. Monday has come and gone and Iran is keeping its powder dry. Judge Napolitano and I discussed the implications of former Russian Defense Chief Shoigu’s visit to Iran. Shoigu, in his new role as a national security adviser to Putin, most likely was in Tehran to discuss Iran’s plans for retaliation, to share intelligence and reaffirm Russia’s de facto agreement to assist Iran if it is attacked by a combination of Israeli and US combat air and missiles. I would not be surprised to learn that Russia has provided Iran with some S-400 missile defense systems.

Israel, true to form, is behaving like an out-of-control schizophrenic. On the one hand, preparations are underway to hided members of Netanyahu’s government in underground, reinforced bunkers. On the other hand, Israel is talking about launching a peremptive attack on Iran. I wonder if Israel and their US counterparts have figured out that a peremptive Israeli attack would further solidify its status as a lawless state?
