Regional and international sources, including Reuters, continue to report on Russian forces making steady gains in Ukraine's east. But now these gains are coming so rapidly that Ukrainian civilians are having to hastily flee their homes amid the onslaught. 

Reuters for example speaks of a "wave of people fleeing Russian advances on several fronts in the eastern region of Donetsk, as Moscow batters" steadily across Ukraine's defensive front lines.

"Pressing home their advantages in manpower and weapons, Russian forces have fought their way towards major towns and supply routes in pursuit of their goal of full control of Ukraine's industrialized and mineral-rich Donbas," the report continues.

Ukrainian officials have of late admitted that Russia has almost captured and solidified its hold over all of Donetsk Oblast. President Zelensky on Friday acknowledged Pokrovsk sector to be scene of the "most severe battles" and now a prime target for Moscow. According to the latest gains:

One recent advance has allowed Russia to open a salient only 20 km (12 miles) from Pokrovsk, an important logistical hub and still home to about 60,000 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday that Pokrovsk was now Russia's main target.

Moscow has claimed control of four villages east of Pokrovsk in the last week. Ukraine did not comment on those claims.

Russian soldiers have reached the edge of Toretsk, where the regional governor said a week ago that only 3,500 people were left, just over 10% of the prewar population. More have since been evacuated by authorities and humanitarian organizations..........more.........

I, on the other hand, have shot several squirrels with my Sears Single Shot .22.  They were not records, but they were tasty. 

On 10 May, 1953, Bella Twin was hunting small game with her partner, Dave Auger, along an oil exploration cutline south of Slave Lake, in Alberta, Canada. She was 63 years old.

They saw a large grizzly bear coming toward them. Wishing to avoid an encounter, they hid off the side of the cut.

But the bear kept coming closer and closer.  The bear got so close that Bella Twin thought it less risky to shoot the bear than to not shoot it.  It was probably only a few yards away. Some accounts say 30 feet. Perhaps she saw it stop and start to sniff, as if it had caught their scent. We may never know.

She shot at the side of the bears head.  Knowing animal anatomy very well (she was an experienced trapper, and had skinned hundreds, perhaps thousands of animals) she knew exactly where to aim to penetrate the skull at its weakest point.

She shot, the bear dropped. It was huge. She went to the bear and fired the rest of the .22 long cartridges that she had, loading the single shot rifle repeatedly, to “pay the insurance” as Peter Hathaway Capstick said.  She made sure the bear was dead, and not just stunned.

Letitia James’ Vendetta

And now Letitia James, the notorious N.Y. attorney general who tag-teamed with a judge to try to pummel former President Donald Trump, has claimed another scalp: nonprofit anti-(destructive)immigration entity VDARE, which, after three years of lawfare attacks, is going to be suspending operations. The kicker:

James has not charged VDARE with anything, says site founder Peter Brimelow.

So this goes beyond even Stalin secret police chief Lavrentiy Beria’s vow, “Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.”

It’s “Show me the man and I’ll show you the process-is-punishment lawfare method.”

Multifaceted Attacks

Yet VDARE’s story is even more troubling than the above suggests. Also a victim of what Brimelow calls a “de facto ‘Social Credit’ system,” the organization has been subject to financial-arena and business-realm “cancellation” that have made survival difficult even aside from the lawfare attacks. (It’s part of a wider effort to “defund” patriotic, virtue-oriented voices.)

More bizarrely still, VDARE has been targeted with what Brimelow describes as cyberattacks so “extraordinary” that they’ve “baffled” the site’s techies. How’s that for “weird,” to use the term the mainstream media are now tarring Republicans with, all while ignoring the profoundly weird and newsworthy VDARE story?

The irony is that the organization’s problems started because of cancel culture in the first place. That is, since hotels kept canceling VDARE’s meeting bookings — an increasingly common experience for conservatives — it purchased a $1.4 million West Virginia castle as a conference space. Yet this acquisition was then used as a pretext to go after the site, with a legal case that appeared “to hinge on whether or not the founders of VDARE use[d] it as their personal dwelling,” as The American Conservative’s Christopher Brunet reported in April.

No Crime

If there were any “there” there, however, wouldn’t VDARE have been charged with a crime? Yet despite this not happening, the site has been, wrote Brunet earlier this year (his quoted material is from VDARE), forced to fight..........more..........
