Since that time, every attempt has been made to mischaracterize this statement by Johnson, to “excuse it,” or obfuscate about it.

Personally, I think Johnson was clear.

Half a century ago, I was in South Vietnam as a Marine combat infantryman. Even then, I knew the history of the conflict, to an extent anyway, having read Bernard Fall’s Two Vietnams and Street Without Joy, the latter I found sitting in the library on the USS Cleveland, a naval ship used by Marines for beach assaults on “enemy held” regions of South Vietnam.

The truth, of course, is that the US was in South Vietnam to prevent an election that the US was a signatory to and guarantor for, in accordance with the Geneva Conference of 1954 which covered both issues of Korea and Indochina.

The real source of the fighting was the oppressive Diem regime in Saigon that operated as an oppressive dictatorship, outlawing Buddhist religious practices, banning newspapers, and imprisoning and executing tens of thousands.

Americans weren’t in Vietnam fighting communists but rather the NLF, the National Liberation Front, not the Communist Viet Minh but rather the Viet Cong, which represented a wide variety of political groups.

The US largely defeated this organization but, as the US fled Vietnam, that nation was then taken over by communists, as the US had defeated the democratic organizations in a war that eventually killed 2.2 million Americans.

It is interesting to note how the Israel Lobby is able to manage and contain the commentary of groups in America that might normally be critical of Israeli policies vis-à-vis the United States. A recent article by Professor Andrew Bacevich entitled “President Trump, Please End the American Era in the Middle East” is a good example of how self-censorship by authors works. The piece appeared as one of Bacevich’s regular weekly contributions to The American Conservative website under the rubric “Realism and Restraint.”

The article particularly focused on the foreign policy pronouncements of Bret Stephens, the resident neocon who writes for The New York Times. Stephens, per Bacevich, has been urging constant war in the Middle East and worrying lest “we may be witnessing the beginning of the end of the American era in the Middle East.” Bacevich, unlike Stephens, is a genuine foreign policy expert, a realist, an Army veteran, and always quite sensible. He correctly described how “in the Middle East, the military power of the United States has played a large part in exacerbating problems rather than contributing to their solution.”

The overall message is sound, but in this case, it is interesting to note what Bacevich left out rather than what he included. It is easy to understand the “realism” part when he writes and it is sometimes also possible to perceive the “restraint.” He cited Iran seven times as well as Saudi Arabia, but, strangely enough, he never mentioned Israel at all, which a number of commenters on the piece noted. It rather suggests that there is a line that Bacevich is reluctant to cross. A terrible fear has come over me.  Observing its rate of collapse, I am likely to outlive Western Civilization, or what little remains of it.

British Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn thinks he can get elected prime minister by promising to open the UK’s border to all comers and to house them by seizing houses and office blocks.  This, of course, means a Camp of the Saints moment for Great Britain.  So many Brits are so far gone that Corbyn thinks this is a winning platform.

The current French president and German chancellor, as well as the European Union bosses, hold the same view.  There is to be no Europe. Only Hungary, Italy, and Poland dissent and insist on remaining Hungarian, Polish, and Italian.

Alas, the Democratic Party in the US has the same view as Corbyn.  One of the reasons they want to impeach Trump is that he is, as head of the executive branch, trying against the Democrats’ opposition to enforce the immigration laws of the United States. 

The current stock of Democrats are just like the current stock of CEO and boards of directors.  They are short-run focused.  What they can get right now is all that is important.  More money by sending American jobs aboad and hiring foreigners on work visas, by open borders that bring in cheaper labor and immigrant votes for Democrats.  Hello “performance bonuses,” Goodbye America.

Schiff set up a prima facie case for dismissal of his own case against Mr. Trump. Any way you slice the stunt, it smells like malfeasance.

Then there is the alleged “Whistleblower.” The identity of this shadowy figure can’t be concealed indefinitely. The Whistleblower may not even exist, and if he or she does, the classification of whistleblower may not apply to the actions taken by him/her and his/her managers. He/she has been officially described as a CIA agent detailed for some time in the White House during the Obama years, who may have been rotated back into the Trump White House on the pretext of some special expertise, say Ukrainian affairs. That suggests his/her origin as a John Brennan tool. That is, the former CIA chief now nervously awaiting the legal disposition of his intrigues in the RussiaGate matter.
