Fior Pichardo de Veloz, a grandmother arrested in Miami, suffered a serious indignity at the hands of the Miami-Dade County Corrections Department: jailers booked her as a man and she spent nearly 10 hours in a holding cell surrounded by leering inmates.
Her shame was compounded when a federal judge threw out her lawsuit, saying the jail staffers were protected from a trial for negligence.
But clearly disturbed by the outrageous mistake, a federal appeals court this month reinstated the lawsuit against the jail doctor and nurse who insisted jail officers book Pichardo as a man — even though a strip search had already shown she was a woman.
“Every reasonable prison officer and medical personnel would have known that wrongfully misclassifying a biological female as a male inmate and placing that female in the male population of a detention facility was unlawful,” Judge Frank Hull wrote in the unanimous opinion released Nov. 21.
The decision means that she can now pursue a trial against Dr. Fredesvindo Rodriguez-Garcia and nurse Fatu Kamara Harris. An attorney for Miami-Dade County, which is representing the doctor, declined to comment. Harris’ lawyer did not return a request for comment.

Landlord Tells Harvard Student to Move Out Over Legally Owned Guns

A Massachusetts landlord told a Harvard
University graduate student that he wanted her to move out of her
apartment because her legally owned firearms made some of her roommates
uncomfortable.
“Since it’s clear that Leyla wants to
keep her firearms, it would be best for all parties if she finds another
place to live,” Dave Lewis, president of Avid Management, said in an email to the household obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
The request that the student, Leyla
Pirnie, move out came after her roommates searched her room while she
was not home and found her firearms. That prompted one of the roommates
to email Lewis requesting he verify that Pirnie was in compliance with applicable firearms laws.
“We discussed with Leyla that all of us
are uncomfortable with having firearms in the house, and that their
presence causes anxiety and deprives us of the quiet enjoyment of the
premise to which we are entitled,” the roommate wrote to Lewis.
Pirnie said she feels her roommates violated her privacy and now they and her landlord are trying to violate her rights.
“A few weeks ago, I came back to my
apartment from a weekend trip and was confronted by one of my roommates
who asked if I had guns in the house,” she told the Free Beacon.
“After being told far too many lies to count, my roommates finally
admitted that they searched my closet, under my bed, and all of my
drawers in pursuit of finding my guns.”
While she was given several different
explanations for why the roommates entered and searched her room, the
24-year-old said she felt her political beliefs and where she is from

Seventeen years later, after a disastrous run of US interventions in the Middle East and Northern Africa and the rout of Sunni jihadists in Syria by the combined forces of the Syrian government, Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, it’s clear that Islamic terrorism is no longer a threat that stirs the paranoia necessary to feed big military and intelligence budgets. So switch the enemy again, now it’s Russia and China. The best insight the intelligence community could offer about those two is that they’ve grown stronger by doing the opposite of the US. For the most part they’ve stayed in their own neighborhoods. They accept that they’re constituents, albeit important ones, of a multipolar global order. Although they’ll use big sticks to protect their interests, carrots like the Belt and Road Initiative further their influence much better than the US’s bullets and bombs.
If the intelligence complex truly cared about the country, they might
go public with the observation that the empire is going broke. However,
raising awareness of this dire threat—as opposed to standard
intelligence bogeymen—might prompt reexamination of intelligence and
military budgets and the foreign policy that supports them. Insolvency
will strangle the US’s exorbitantly expensive interventionism. It will
be the first real curb on the intelligence complex since World War II,
but don’t except any proactive measures beforehand from those charged
with foreseeing the future.
Conspiracy theories, a term popularized by the CIA to denigrate Warren Commission skeptics, are often proved correct. However, trying to determine the truth behind intelligence agency conspiracies is a time and energy-consuming task, usually producing much frustration and little illumination. Instead, as Caitlin Johnstone recently observed, we’re better off fighting on moral and philosophical grounds the intelligence complex and the rest of the government’s depredations that are in plain sight.
Attack the intellectual foundations of empire and you attack the whole rickety edifice, including intelligence, that supports it. Tell the truth and you threaten those who deal in lies. Champion sanity and logic and you challenge the insane irrationality of the powers that be. They are daunting tasks, but less daunting than trying to excavate and clean the intelligence sewer.

In particular, the Preventing Destabilization of Iraq Act calls on the US president to impose sanctions on any foreign people he determines knowingly commit “a significant act of violence that has the direct purpose or effect of — (1) threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; (2) undermining the democratic process in Iraq; or (3) undermining significantly efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.” Further, the bill charges the US Secretary of State to determine if listed individuals should be sanctioned and if people connected to certain organizations should be considered terrorists or sanctioned. In other words, the bill calls for ramping up proven destructive policies for reshaping Iraq.
Also included in the bill is a call for action that would help push for escalating the US government’s destabilization project in Iran. The bill says the Secretary of State “shall annually establish, maintain, and publish a list of armed groups, militias, or proxy forces in Iraq receiving logistical, military, or financial assistance from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps or over which Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps exerts any form of control or influence.” Thus, claims of Iran’s intervention in its neighboring country can be used to build the case for massive intervention in Iran, up to invasion and conquest of Iran, by a nation thousands of miles away.
