Colorado is running a political prison system, and one of its most high-profile victims is former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, now gravely ill inside a DOC facility that has repeatedly retaliated against her, denied her proper medical care, and subjected her to inhumane living conditions.

On December 8, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon sent an official notice to Colorado Governor Jared Polis announcing the opening of a sweeping Civil Rights Division investigation into the Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) and the Department of Youth Services (DYS).

The investigation covers conditions across 21 state-run facilities and 12 youth centers, including the facility where Tina Peters is currently incarcerated.

This action comes after mounting reports of constitutional violations, excessive force, unsafe conditions, medical neglect, and religious discrimination inside Colorado prisons.

And one case embodies those abuses more clearly than any other: Tina Peters, the whistleblower who dared to expose vulnerabilities in Colorado’s election systems.
