 US president Donald Trump has reportedly dismissed an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week.

Iran‘s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi had presented the seven-day plan to American negotiators on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It stated that Tehran would reopen the key waterway and resume talks on its nuclear programme but only if the US lifts its naval blockade, waives oil sanctions and observes a ceasefire that includes Lebanon.

Araghchi told reporters at the United Nations: “The choice ‌now rests with the United States.”

The White House said it was engaged in “constructive discussions” via mediators, but a Wall St Journal report cited US officials as saying Trump was sceptical that Iran would meet his demands..

The report said Trump told his staff that he sees a renewed bombing campaign as likely, and that he expects to resume hostilities after the November midterm elections.

It comes after Donald Trump told Xi Jinping that Chinese help for Iran was “totally unacceptable” during their summit in the United States this week, his ambassador to Beijing said on Friday.........more..........

 Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has outlined a seven-day plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, saying implementation would begin immediately if the United States accepted Iran’s conditions.

Speaking at a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Friday, the top diplomat said the seven-day period would begin once Washington accepted the plan.

“If that happens tomorrow, implementation of the plan will begin immediately,” he said.

Araghchi said Iran believes the necessary process could be completed within four or five days if the required measures were taken.

According to the foreign minister, under the proposed sequence, the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on the sixth day, followed by the United States’ entering into a final agreement on the seventh day.

He said the measures required from the United States had already been communicated to the American side and were set out within the framework of the Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding.

The September 12 assault began after a group of up to 30 youths gathered outside the students’ home following what authorities described as an illegal street takeover.

According to Fox 43, the students called 911 four times before the violence began.

After a street racer struck a parked car, the students asked the crowd to leave their property. A black female teenager then stepped onto the porch and threw the first punch. Others quickly piled on. Video shows members of the mob dragging the students by their hair and brutally beating them.

As the attack unfolded, one of the students placed a fifth call to police. Officers finally arrived, prompting the crowd to disperse.

Despite the uncivilized nature of the incident, it took police a week to make the first arrests in this case.

While police have not released an official racial breakdown of the attackers or the three juveniles charged, nor is the racial identity of every person in the mob clearly discernible from the footage, the video appears to show at least a predominantly black group assaulting the white female students.

The racial identities of the attackers and victims do not, by themselves, prove a hate crime. But given the savagery of the assault, the apparent racial dynamic, and the troubling delay in making any arrests, the possibility of a racial motive deserves a thorough investigation. Had the races been reversed, the story would have dominated media coverage for days — or far longer.........more..........

In truly deranged remarks to world leaders at the U.N., Donald Trump declared that “I have a big decision to make,” whether to negotiate a deal with Iran or instead to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” and drive Iran “into hell with no chance of survival.”

He posed it as his personal choice. The fact that the American people are dead set against Trump’s war means nothing. And as for the voters, he added that he gives “absolutely no credence” to the coming midterm elections in deciding on his actions and on Iran’s fate.

The President’s threat to annihilate a member state of the United Nations, delivered from the General Assembly podium, disgraced Trump in front of the world.

Nothing binds this President. He is not bound by law, the Constitution, the U.N. Charter, or public opinion at home and abroad. When asked at the start of the year whether he has any limits on his power, he said “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Perhaps the most admirable thing about libertarianism is that it’s simple and for that reason, easy to understand. The core concept is that everyone ought to leave everyone else alone – so long as they are doing the same. It’s a reformulation of the Golden Rule, which – ironically – most people say they agree with and teach their kids.

At least, they used to.

Contrast the libertarian concept – the principle of leaving other people alone so long as they do the same – with the chaotic jumble of often-contradictory positions that don’t define what a Republican or a Democrat is, because nothing is defined when it is a constantly changing chaotic jumble of often-contradictory positions. One example is the Republican practice of “mending” – but not ending – authoritarian programs such as Obamacare. “Mending” in this context is a working synonym for agreeing with the basic merit of whatever the “program” is but saying we can make it “work” better. Another example is the “de-criminalization” – gaslighting, phone home! – of by definition not-criminal mere use/possession/sale of some “drugs,” such as marijuana (and alcohol, too).  It is teeth-achingly incoherent to style a political party as being the “freedom” party when it meters the freedoms people are permitted to have. What you’ve got is a single party that has a slightly different take on which freedoms it will meter and for what purpose.
