David M. Hodne and Maj. Gen. William “Bill” Green Jr. The word on the street is that General George opposes launching a ground attack in Iran. Before exploring the implications of this, I want to introduce you to these three men.

Gen. Randy A. George is the 41st Chief of Staff of the US Army. He was commissioned as an infantry officer from West Point in 1988 and has served in major command and joint leadership roles across the Army. George entered the Army as an infantry officer and served in combat and command assignments in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He commanded at the company, battalion, brigade, division, and corps levels, which is a common progression for senior Army leaders. Before becoming Chief of Staff, he served as the 38th Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and as senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense. He also commanded the 4th Infantry Division and I Corps Chief of Staff George assumed duties as Army Chief of Staff on September 21, 2023. Chicago’s mayor in a Tuesday news conference doubled down on recent comments that sparked backlash in the wake of the killing of 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman.

At a “No Kings” rally in the Windy City on Saturday, Mayor Brandon Johnson vowed to stop “assaults” on immigrants. The comments came on the same day that Gorman was buried, drawing fierce criticism from some. The suspect in her murder is Jose Medina-Medina, 25, an illegal immigrant from Colombia.

“We have [to] end the assaults against immigrants,” Johnson said at the rally. “We have to get active. First of all, we have to make sure that we’re participating in our democratic process. We’ve already seen election shift around this country, so things are happening. We have signed multiple executive orders to force ICE out of the city of Chicago.”

Asked by a reporter on Tuesday whether he would apologize to Gorman’s parents, Johnson ducked the question.

“I will again acknowledge the tragedy of the loss of life here,” Johnson said. “You know, look, burying a child is something that no parent should have to do, especially as someone who is a parent. The tragedy that occurred is one that, quite frankly — it challenges us to do better to ensure that we are protecting people — and you know, as far as the call for no kings, what I said, and I still stand by this, that we do have to protect working people. President Trump’s 19 minute speech tonight was an extraordinary collection of blatant lies and fantastic delusions.  He repeatedly claimed over and over that Iran was decimated.  So why isn’t the war over?  Why does it have to continue for another month?  

Trump addressed no issue.  He did not acknowledge that it is US and Israel’s radar sites that have been decimated along with American bases.  He did not acknowledge that Israeli-America has run out of interceptor missiles, and that Poland, a NATO ally, has refused Trump’s pressure to release the US missiles systems in Poland to Israel.

The facts on the ground are that Israel and US bases on the Persian Gulf are defenseless and cannot stop incoming Iranian missiles that strike at will.

Does Trump really think 19 minutes of hot air can hide the tremendous defeat that Trump has suffered from starting a war that his own hand-picked Chairman of the Joint Chiefs advised him against as the US lacked sufficient munitions to continue the war more than a few weeks?

Many hoped that tonight Trump would declare victory and with the war declared won pull out and go home.  Apparently, the powerful Israel Lobby was able to prevent Trump from extricating himself from the trap in which he foolishly placed himself.

Tonight Trump presented the world with an a delusional American president divorced from reality.  Will anyone notice–certainly C-Span’s commentator Matthew Kroenig did not–or do they, like Trump, prefer delusion to reality?

Trump’s blustering April Fool’s day speech would easily have served as a hilarious April Fool’s day joke.  But it was just bluster to take the place of the discarded 10-day ultimatum that replaced the discarded 5-day ultimatum with a 3 or 4 week ultimatum.  As I asked, if Iran is as totally destroyed as Trump asserts, what is the purpose of Trump’s ultimatum?

Time is running out for Trump, not for Iran.  The last time an American president took America to war Constitutionally was 1941 when Congress gave the executive branch permission to enter the war with the Constitutionally required Congressional Declaration of War. As time went by Congress finally responded to presidential decisions to go to war without a Congressional declaration of war not by impeaching the President, which should have been done in order to protect the Constitutional political order and separation of powers, but by requiring the president who initiates military action without Congressional approval to come to Congress with a deadline of 60 days after initiating military action for congressional approval to continue the military action. 

In other words, Congress failed to defend the Constitution’s Separation of Powers by allowing the executive branch to exercise a power it does not have to go to war and, afterward, to come to Congress for approval. In the past Congress has rubber-stamped the President’s decision.

But this time it is different. Polls indicate that a majority of Americans do not share Trump’s concern  about the Iranian threat to America.  They do not support Netanyahu’s war.  Even many American Jews do not support the war...........more.........
