Hamish de Bretton-Gordon (a retired British Army colonel, former commander of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, chemical weapons expert, and frequent commentator on defense/military matters) is at it again, having just published an article on January 30, 2026 in the Telegraph titled, “Desperate Putin is coming to the end of the road” (also headlined as “Putin’s army is on its knees. When it still has them”).

This is not the first time that Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon makes a fool of himself… He has a proven track record of being completely wrong about the war in Ukraine. Consider his bold and totally wrong predictions on Ukraine’s 2023 offensive that was supposed to push the Russians into the Black Sea. (Spoiler alert: The Russians completely defeated the Ukrainian offensive by the end of August 2023.)

Even before Ukraine launched its failed offensive in June 2023, Hamish was notably optimistic about Ukraine’s prospects, predicting strong Ukrainian performance based on superior Western equipment, tactics, and Russian weaknesses.

“Government X does bad things” and “therefore the US should forcibly overthrow Government X” are two completely different claims. Propagandists keep acting like they’re the same claim and like the second claim naturally follows the first, and I’m seeing far too many people accepting this manipulation without question.

They are not the same claim. They’re entirely unrelated. It should not be necessary to explain this to grown adults, but here we are.

Even if we accept as fact all the claims about how badly the US-targeted government is behaving, and even if we ignore the obvious fact that unilateral US regime change wars are against international law, there is still no valid reason to accept that a government doing bad things justifies US regime change interventionism.

Just because a foreign government has done bad things does not mean it would be good if another government took military action to overthrow them. This is uniquely true of the United States, who is quantifiably the single most tyrannical government on earth, and whose regime change interventionism reliably causes more death, suffering and abuse than its proponents claimed they were trying to stop............more..........

Everyone is getting to know this new kind of government system we have recently been gifted. Some seem to like it, apparently purely as a result of a kind of BDSM fetishism, wherein an individual enjoys being stomped on and having their dog shot. Others are lashing out. Most are simply confused.

Between the unleashing of a domestic paramilitary force that just kills people and the christening of a mega-warmachine that openly presents itself as a gang of pirates, the United States has dropped any pretense of being something other than a totalitarian state which acts with impunity at home and abroad.

One can argue about how long we have been living under this type of a system without anyone saying it aloud. Certainly, those brave folks who were crushed while resisting forced integration in the South would tell you it has been a long time since the people of this country had the right to self-determination, and the millions of dead Germans, Vietnamese, Koreans, and Moslems would tell you that US adherence to “international norms” has always been a fraud. Regardless, we have entered into something totally new under “Donald Trump 2: Double Jew Up Your Ass” in that the government is no longer pretending that people have rights, no longer pretending there is such a thing as an international order.

Pretense is a type of fraud. But when the overwhelming majority of people believe in the pretense, it holds a lot of weight, as everyone acts as though the fraud is real. And, like rights and laws, which are abstractions, people acting as though they are real means they carry real weight, even if the government can and does violate them with impunity. When the Trump administration sent some 2,000 immigration agents to the Twin Cities area, they were met by activists who trailed their movements and harassed them outside their hotels. At the center of the unrest is the Sunrise Movement, a left-wing group founded to fight climate change that has since directed its local chapters to fight the Trump administration. For Sunrise Twin Cities, that means tormenting ICE agents on the ground. The group holds in-person “action trainings” on how to “stop ICE & build a revolution.” It also maintains a running list of the Twin Cities hotels housing ICE agents and organizes late-night “noise demonstrations” aimed at making it “impossible” for those hotels to operate.

Sunrise is bankrolled by a who’s who of deep-pocketed left-wing organizations. Open Society Foundations has sent it $2 million since 2019, according to its grant database. Half of the money supported general “social welfare activities.” The Ford Foundation contributed $150,000 in 2024 and $550,000 in 2025, while the MacArthur Foundation—the 12th-largest private charity in America—gave $250,000 in 2024, according to tax filings and grant disclosures. Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation has issued a formal warning that any military strike on Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant would carry severe radiological risks, as multiple military and aviation indicators point to rising regional tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, said on Thursday that an attack on the Bushehr facility could result in radioactive consequences comparable in scale to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. His remarks come amid new airspace restrictions over southern Iran and the reported forward deployment of U.S. nuclear detection aircraft toward the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters, Likhachev confirmed that Russia is actively preparing contingency measures to evacuate Russian nuclear specialists currently stationed at Bushehr, should the security situation deteriorate further. The plant was built by Russia and continues to be operated with Russian technical support and fuel supply.

Likhachev stated that Rosatom is coordinating closely with Russia’s Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to monitor developments and ensure the safety of Russian personnel.
