The U.S. Navy’s carrier fleet is stretched thinner than it looks on paper. Out of 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, only 4 are currently operational. The rest are either docked for repairs, undergoing refueling, or stuck in overhaul cycles that can drag on for years. That’s not a rumor. That’s the July 2025 status confirmed by fleet trackers and Navy dispatches.

USS Gerald R. Ford is now in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, leading Carrier Strike Group 12. It left Norfolk on schedule, but its deployment is more than routine. It’s filling gaps. USS Carl Vinson is in the Arabian Sea under Central Command. USS George Washington just pulled into Manila and is now pushing through the South China Sea. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has been in the Red Sea since October 2023 and is wrapping up a long haul. That’s the full list of carriers currently active.

The rest are offline. USS Stennis is still in refueling overhaul. USS Nimitz is docked for maintenance. USS Bush is in post-deployment recovery. USS Ford, despite its name being on the active list, is also in maintenance after its last extended run. These ships don’t bounce back quickly. A full overhaul can take 18 to 36 months depending on the condition and backlog. The Navy’s own reports show that half the fleet is unavailable at any given time due to the sheer complexity of keeping these 100,000-ton platforms combat-ready..............more........
