As the war between the United States and Iran escalates again, Jordan has increasingly become the focus of renewed violence.

An Iranian attack that killed two US personnel in Jordan on Friday was the fourth in five days, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

On Monday, Iran claimed its ballistic missiles hit US military aircraft at the airport in the Jordanian port of Aqaba.

In recent months, the Pentagon has “shifted a number of troops from Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to relatively more secure locations in Jordan and Israel,” according to the Times.

Yet despite the growing US-Israeli reliance on Jordan, Israel has slashed the amount of water it allowed to flow to Jordan and may be using the issue to pressure its neighbor into even greater political subservience – a dangerous game given that the Jordanian population remains deeply hostile to Israel.

Water-starved Jordan

Under their 1994 peace treaty, Israel must transfer 20 million cubic meters of Jordan River water to Jordan each summer and supply another 10 million cubic meters annually, while respecting Jordan’s rights to most of the Yarmouk River’s remaining flow............more...........
