The policing of “information” is the stuff of Naziism, Stalinism, Maoism, and similar anti-liberal regimes. To repress criticism of their dicta and diktats, anti-liberals label criticism “misinformation” or “disinformation.” Those labels are instruments to crush dissent. 

This paper offers an understanding of knowledge as involving three chief facets: information, interpretation, and judgment. Usually, what people argue fervently over is not information, but interpretation and judgment. 

What is being labeled and attacked as “misinformation” is not a matter of true or false information, but of true or false knowledge—meaning that disagreement more commonly arises over interpretations and judgments as to which interpretations to take stock in or believe. We make judgments, “good” and “bad,” “wise” and “foolish,” about interpretations, “true” and “false.” 

On that understanding, the paper explains that the projects and policies now afoot styled “anti-misinformation” and “anti-disinformation” are dishonest, as it should be obvious to all that those projects and policies would, if advanced honestly, be called something like “anti-falsehood” campaigns.

But to prosecute an “anti-falsehood” campaign would make obvious the true nature of what is afoot—an Orwellian boot to stomp on Wrongthink. To support governmental policing of “information” is to confess one’s anti-liberalism and illiberality. A while ago I reported to my readers that for several years the most widely read articles on my website were those presenting the overwhelming evidence that Germany did not start World War II, so striking were the facts from the false narrative we had been told.

For the most part academic historians are court historians who write feelgood accounts, accounts based more on war propaganda than on documents and facts.  Academic historians who are the exceptions, such as A.J.P. Taylor and Harry Elmer Barnes, and tell the truth are “disappeared” as a consequence.  In Irving’s case a decades long campaign has been conducted against him for writing history based on the documents rather than repetition of the feelgood narrative.  

What it so often comes down to is that in America and the Western world to be a success a person has to ally with an influential interest group and write lies that advance the interest group’s interest.  This is the main activity of university faculty.  It even affects science.  Consider how many physicists and chemists, for example, receive salaries or research grants from the federal government.  This is the reason that physicists, who must know that the official account of the collapse of the three World Trade Center skyscrapers cannot possibly be correct, did not rally to the support of the few scientists who proved the account to be false.  To have done so would have ended their and their colleagues access to federal funding.  Or consider the academic psychologists who helped the CIA devise means of torture, or the academic economists whose corporate grants insured their defense of the offshoring of US manufacturing jobs.  The private sector also has a role in suppressing truth.  Any structural engineering or high-rise architectural firm that supported the dissident view of the World Trade Center would be perceived as anti-American and lose clients.

Try to think of historical incidents in which the messengers were not shot and the deceivers rewarded.

Our own time, right now, is probably the worst of all.  Truth is actually being criminalized, and false charges against an American President are moving forward without effective opposition.
