i could easily post several of these a day, and that's without looking for them: i just run across them. it makes a clear case to me, and perhaps you, that 'protect and serve' is long gone, at best;
Chicago, IL — A disturbing video has been released as part of a lawsuit against the LaSalle County Sheriff’s office showing deputies throw an apparently innocent woman to the ground before stripping off all of her clothes. Zandrea Askew, a former sergeant in the Marine Corps says she was “humiliated, degraded and dehumanized” and the video backs her up.
The lawsuit was filed this week in federal court and it alleges false arrest, abuse, and horrifying treatment by deputies. According to the lawsuit, Askew was sitting in her parked car when two LaSalle County sheriff’s deputies stopped and questioned her. During the stop, deputies demanded that Askew undergo field sobriety tests, despite not committing any traffic violations or being involved in an accident.
The lawsuit claims that even though Askew passed the field sobriety tests, deputies arrested her anyway. According to Askey, she showed no signs of being drunk or under the influence of narcotics but was still charged with DUI. The suit accuses LaSalle County Sheriff Thomas Templeton and several deputies of false arrest, unlawful detention, excessive force, malicious prosecution, and violation of due process.
The sheriff’s office claims they found Askew parked in her car “very disoriented and confused.” Instead of asking her if she needed help, like a true public servant should do, they accused her of a crime—one she says she did not commit.
According to Askew, she pulled over her car because she was feeling ill and was on prescription medication at the time.
Police then thoroughly searched Askew before bringing her down to the jail for processing. JTA has just published a piece on a so-called ‘anti-Semitic hate crime’ that occurred on a Spirit Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. To quote Cnaan Liphshiz’s piece for JTA for the details:
‘An Orthodox Jewish couple from New York said that a Spirit Airlines attendant harassed them on a flight to Florida, though the company said they ignored safety rules.
Chana and Yisroel Beck and their three infant children boarded the flight to Fort Lauderdale Tuesday from Newark Airport, the New York Post reported Thursday. The couple wanted to take aboard a baby carriage that converts into a seat but a flight attendant firmly told them not to take aboard.
One passenger from Rockland County who is identified in the article only as Binyamin told the Post that the flight attendant used anti-Semitic language, telling a colleague something about “those retarded Jews.”
Another crew member told Yisroel Beck he could not seat with the rest of his family in a three-row seat, with one child on his lap, according to the report. When the plane landed, the couple were escorted by security, detained and questioned. Their return tickets were voided and they were banned from flying Spirit, the couple said.
They said this treatment was unjust and uncalled for.’ (1)
This looks fairly clear cut to me. In so far as Chana and Yisroel Beck purchased three seats on the flight and then turned up with their three infant children plus a stroller that could convert into a car seat. They then expected that the airline would ‘accept’ this extra unpaid for seat and began kvetching loudly when they weren’t allowed to use or stick two of their infant children on their laps.
Now I have young children myself and have flown with them. The normal practice would be to purchase three extra seats if the infants are not babies and even then it is common courtesy to do so. The past year saw a threefold increase in racist attacks on Palestinians over 2017, with 482 politically motivated crimes by Jews reported in the West Bank. These included beating and throwing stones at Palestinians, painting nationalist, anti-Arab or anti-Muslim slogans, damaging homes and cars, and cutting down trees belonging to Palestinian farmers.
The murder and its aftermath highlight the utter lawlessness and racism inherent in the Greater Israel project from which the settler movement stems. Speaking to Ha’aretz after the attack, Yacoub Rabi said, “I don’t have any doubt it was the settlers. There were six or seven of them, and it was clear that they were young.”
