a serving of interesting facts about the daily lives of the chosen, in this case being mostly israeli;

We begin this week’s edition of ‘Jews, Crime and Corruption’ with the news that Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit has rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s demand that his multi-count indictment on corruption charges be delayed till after the Israeli election in April (1)  and announced that the proceedings will go ahead as planned. (2) This is despite Netanyahu demanding a televised ‘face-to-face confrontation’ with his accusers, (3) launching his own online TV channel to try and bypass the Israeli media in general (4) and having his political allies within the Likud party petition the Israeli Supreme to have them block his indictment, (5) which has since failed. (6)

This whirlwind of kvetching has been triggered both by Netanyahu’s impending indictment – which he is gathering lawyers for – (7) and the fact that he suddenly has a credible political rival in the form of former IDF Chief-of-Staff Benny Gantz. The latter is surging in the opinion polls, (8) courting political allies (9) and has publically refused point blank to even entertain forming a political alliance or cooperating with Netanyahu. (10) The only cloud on Gantz’s horizon is a lawsuit against him personally by a Palestinian now resident in the Netherlands concerning the conduct of Israeli troops during 2014’s ‘Operation Protective Edge’ in Gaza. (11) In addition to his own former defence minister turning on the Israeli Prime Minister. (12)

Netanyahu has responded to the challenge by booting potential rivals from the Likud party (13) or launching a ‘witch hunt’ against them if he can’t (14) as well as talking up a broad right wing political alliance. (15) This is despite the fact that some of his potential alliance like Jewish Home (16) and Zehut are floundering badly in the polls. (17) Although New Right has gotten fresh support from jewish businesswoman and owner of the Hapoel Be’er Sheba football team Alona Barkat (18) and have also ruled out a political alliance with Gantz. (19)

It just goes show how corrupt Israel is given that you’ve got a Prime Minister who is to be charged with multiple corruption offences still in office and still in the lead to win the next general election. You’ve also got things like a former senior police official being prosecuted for corruption running for the role of ‘Police Minister’ in order to get around his own legal situation (20) and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has had to reject a public request for clemency from former Israeli Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger who is currently in prison for ‘financial crimes’ (aka accepting bribes). (21) In addition to Israeli prison guards trading favours for bribes (22) and ultra-Orthodox jews running fake Yeshivas to scam to Israeli government.
