The Israeli military has occupied several villages south of Damascus, with its tanks now being stationed around 20 kilometers from the outskirts of the Syrian capital, a new report says.

Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television network reported on Tuesday that the Israeli tanks have moved past the southwestern Syrian city of Quneitra and reached 3 kilometers away from the town of Qatana, near Damascus.

Israel started the push to expand its occupation of Syria on Sunday, after foreign-backed militants, led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), announced the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government following a rapid two-week offensive that led to the capture of Damascus.

Israeli forces seized the buffer zone that separates the occupied Golan Heights from the rest of Syria in violation of a 1974 disengagement agreement between the Tel Aviv regime and Syria.

They also captured the strategic Mount Hermon in Golan, which provides high ground for the entire area.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said his country is “transforming the face of the Middle East” following the overthrow of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad.

Speaking at an evening press briefing, Netanyahu said Israel was defeating its enemies “step by step” in what he called an “existential war that has been imposed upon us.”

Netanyahu referred to al-Assad’s regime as a “central element of Iran’s axis of evil,” accusing Syria of promoting hatred against Israel, attacking during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and facilitating a “weapons pipeline” between Iran and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.

He said that the collapse of al-Assad’s regime was a “direct result” of Israel’s military actions against Iran and Iran-backed militias in the region, which include Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

However, he noted that Iran’s “axis of evil” has not yet disappeared. He said that Israel is “transforming the face of the Middle East” and that “the State of Israel is establishing its position as a centre of power in our region, as it has not been for decades.”

There is nothing normal about the conversations going on concerning Trump’s cabinet nominations. The Republican vote ought to be a given. Convincing some of the Democrats is supposed to be the play. Despite the kaleidoscope of fools in the Biden Administration, there was nothing like this sort of pushback from the Republicans at the time, though the people ridiculed people like Buttigieg and railed at naming Merrick Garland at the head of the DOJ.

The Senate is merely supposed to give its collective advice and then consent. They have taken this to mean that they have some say in the president’s selections, but that’s not the case. In fact, under Biden, these roles have grown to such power that they should actually be elected posts. The people have a particular stake in who is the at the Department of Justice as it has been directed at the people themselves. They certainly should have a say in who’s the head of Health and Human Services, since corporations, with this department looking the other way, have chosen to allow poisonous ingredients into the food supply that benefit the manufacturer by lowering costs and using chemicals to keep products looking fresh before purchase. If the people would have been able to recall someone like Fauci, they might have done so. Since, however, our current system doesn’t allow for that, the people should have a larger say in their nomination and subsequent confirmation than rogue senators seeking to leverage their acquiescence for future chairmanships or a greater share of senate campaign funds.

It’s clear that the Senate has little regard for the opinions of the people. This is how powerful senators like McConnell and Thune can go against the desires of their constituents in order to play power politics in the nation’s capitol. The six year term relieves them of consideration of the will of the people for four years before they have to start campaigning again and then toss out some bread crumbs to the peasants. This year, however, senators who are up for re-election in 2026 are defying their constituents by refusing to vote for Trump’s cabinet picks or making hay for the Democrats by defaming them.
