On Oct. 25, 2002, incumbent U.S. Democrat Senator from Minnesota Paul Wellstone was campaigning for a third term when he died in a plane crash. The crash occurred just 11 days before the election, and 58-year-old Wellstone was ahead in the polls.
His seat went to his Republican Party rival, and that tipped the scales for a GOP majority in the U.S. Senate.
Wellstone was one of the last spirited anti-war progressive populists on the scene. He opposed the first Gulf War in 1991 and, in the months before his death, spoke out and voted against the government’s threats to go to war with Iraq again.

Cui Bono?

The death — or, as we suggest, the assassination — of Wellstone removed a key obstacle for the Crime Syndicate to steamroll yet more tax cuts through for the rich, unending bankers’ wars and a never-seen-before boom for the military/security-industrial complex. Persons like him are now missing in action in the Crime Syndicate takeover of America.
Wellstone had been one of only eight members of the Senate to vote against the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999. Just eight days prior to his death, on Oct. 17, the maverick senator introduced the Consumer Shareholder Protection Act (SB 3143) that posed more challenges to banksters.
He opposed the Patriot Act. He was a longtime critic of the CIA and covert operations. He’d been a constant thorn in the side of President George H. W. Bruno walks into a neighborhood shop and threatens the shopkeeper with unspecified “bad things” if the shopkeeper doesn’t fork over $200 a week. The shopkeeper pays. If Bruno runs a “legitimate” protection racket, bad things don’t happen.
You can skip a class, indeed an entire four-year program in political theory, if you realize that governments are everywhere and always protection rackets. Fork over money and personal freedom and the state will protect you from bad things, specified or otherwise. Sometimes the state aligns itself with a deity or deities, demanding not just money and obedience but worship, too.
What if the shopkeeper pays Bruno, but his shop is still beset with burglaries? What if he discovers that Bruno is the burglar? The shopkeeper faces the same quandary as billions of people who are subjugated by governments: they need protection from their protection rackets. The protector has dropped all pretense of protection and has become a predator.
When the Soviet Union conducted its first successful atomic bomb test on August 29, 1949, it undercut the protection-racket rationale for governments. No one realized it at the time, but how can you run a protection racket if you can’t protect those you’re purportedly protecting from annihilation? you might be one of those 'consumers' who believe what the tv tells you, or you may have begun to discover that there's more than meets the eye in events in the empire's capital and its propaganda units on the tv, but here you will have the chance to see all is not as you're told;

Never before has any presidential administration been as all over the place in terms of national security and foreign policy as is that of Donald J. Trump. Indeed, one might well argue that there is no overriding policy at all in terms of a rational doctrine arrived at through risk versus gain analysis of developing international situations. Instead, there has been a pattern of emotional reactions fueled by media disinformation supplemented by “gut feelings” about a series of ultimately bilateral relationships that frequently have little or nothing to do with American national interests.

This is not to suggest that the “gut feelings” are always wrong. Established wisdom in Washington has long reflected the view that the United States must exercise leadership in establishing and maintaining the neoliberal consensus that gained currency after the devastation of the Second World War. Elections, free trade and a free media were to be the benchmarks of the new world order but they also came packaged with U.S. hegemony to confront those who resisted the development. And it turned out that those “benefits” were frequently difficult to achieve as elections sometimes produced bad results while trade agreements and an uncontrolled media often worked against broader U.S. objectives. All too often the United States found itself going to war against nations that it disapproves of for reasons unrelated to any actual interests, routinely claiming inaccurately that dissident regimes were both “threatening” and disruptive of the universal values that Washington claimed to be promoting.

To consider how the neoliberal order works in practice one only has to consider the Clintons, who justified brutal military interventions in the Balkans and in Libya based on what they claimed to be humanitarian principles. On the first of April last year I published an article titled “Ignore The Words Of US Presidents. Watch Their Actions Instead.”, about Trump’s claim that his administration would be pulling troops out of Syria “very soon”. Watching the actions and ignoring the words is a personal policy I’ve found very useful in dealing with top government figures who understand that power has nothing to do with truth and everything to do with narrative control, and in that particular case the president’s claims were quickly memory holed after a highly suspicious chemical weapons allegation in Douma a few days later. The president’s words said the troops were leaving, and what actually happened was the US bombing the Syrian government for a second time in a year while troops remained where they were.
Everyone completely lost their shit last month when the president once again made the claim that US troops will be brought home from Syria. Establishment loyalists of the political/media class went into full meltdown, Mattis handed in his resignation, and #Resistance Twitter pundits who’d never typed the word “Kurd” in their lives suddenly became self-appointed experts on the geopolitical dynamics between the Turkish government and the YPG.
