Why do we continue to fight in Afghanistan?
“We continue to fight simply because we are there,” said retired Gen. Karl Eikenberry who preceded Gen. Nicholson.
“Absent political guidance and a diplomatic strategy,” Eikenberry told The New York Times, “military commanders have filled the vacuum by waging a war all agree cannot be won militarily.”
This longest war in U.S. history has become another no-win war.
Yet, if the 14,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan were pulled out, the regime would fall, the Taliban would take over, and the massacres would begin.
So America stays in and soldiers on. For how long?
The 17th anniversary of 9/11, now imminent, appears a proper time to take inventory of our successes and failures in the forever wars of the Middle East into which America was plunged in this new century.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban presence is more pervasive in more provinces than at any time since the regime was overthrown in 2001.

In his new book titled  “The Deep State: How an army of bureaucrats protected Barack Obama and is working to destroy Donald Trump,” Jason Chaffetz alleges that the deep state is very real.  His book, which is set to be published on September 18, details the lengths the intelligence community is going to in an attempt to undermine Trump.
“The Deep State is real,” Chaffetz wrote, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. “They don’t like exposure, accountability or responsibility. They fight back, outlast and work the system for their advantage. And they certainly don’t like disruptive forces such as Donald Trump.”
Chaffetz, a former congressman from Utah, resigned from Congress in June 2017. At the time, that was about six months into Trump’s presidency. Chaffetz then decided to take a job as a political analyst for the FOX News Channel and the FOX Business Network, according to USA Today.

Chaffetz says that the devastating Benghazi incident is what uncovered a larger problem in the corrupt government. “Without exposing Benghazi we might never have learned that Hillary Clinton was using her private email server to conduct government business and transmit classified information,” Chaffetz wrote. “Benghazi was a symptom of a much deeper problem at the State Department. Their decisions were based not on a security calculation, but on a political one.” Chaffetz also tosses the Department of Justice firmly under the bus in his book as well. The DOJ is a frequent target of both Trump and the House Freedom Caucus. “The DOJ should be protecting us,” Chaffetz wrote. “And yet it is the federal agency that stands head and shoulders above the rest in enabling the Swamp.”

The leftists both in political positions and amongst the public see Chaffetz as going after Obama while allowing Trump to run free. “Despite issuing a steady stream of far-reaching subpoenas during the Obama Administration, the Oversight Committee has essentially gone dormant under the Trump Administration, and Chairman Chaffetz’s successor has not issued a single subpoena to anyone, on any issue, ever,” Elijah Cummings, a Democrat from Maryland and the top Democrat on the  House oversight panel said.

The bizarre and escalating “trade war” being waged by Washington against the Chinese is not at all about balance of trade surpluses. The Chinese have apparently recently concluded this as well. It is about an all-out assault on China’s strategy to become an advanced, self-reliant economic leading economy, technologically on a par with the West, perhaps even more advanced. This is the basic content of the Xi Jinping Made in China:2025 national economic strategy .
The United States as the world’s dominant superpower will in no way allow this. Just as the British Empire set the stage for World War I to destroy the potential threat of a German superpower, now Washington confronts a Chinese economic colossus and weighs its options. This clash will likely get very ugly in coming months unless the US backs down, something at present unlikely.
Long Guoqiang, vice president of the Development Research Center of the State Council, in a recent statement reflecting the current view of the Chinese government and party, declared that what he accurately calls“strategic containment” is a central American aim with the trade war. He argues this is being done by “interests extortion” such as threatening trade wars or actually going through with them to force the opening of markets, with the aim of attacking the Chinese “state capitalism” model of development to preserve American hegemony.
Washington launched a similar attack, using private hedge funds, in 1997 to destroy the Asian “Tiger Economies” of South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and other fast developing Asian economies. The upshot of the speculative attacks and ensuing currency crises was the forced reorganization of the state-guided economic model on demand from the IMF, the so-called Washington Consensus. Prior to that, beginning with the infamous dollar-yen Plaza Accord, Washington engineered a Japanese real estate and stock market bubble and the subsequent Bank of Japan long economic deflation to control Japan’s enormous economic advances. The global hegemon—Wall Street and its Washington representatives in the Fed, the IMF and Treasury don’t appreciate competitive equals.
This time, China, whose current trade surpluses are to a large extent derived from Chinese production on license for Apple, GM and countless other US and EU companies for re-export, is determined to become as soon as possible a self-sufficient high-technology economy, no longer dependent on access to critical US technologies such as computer processors. It’s understandable, especially in light of recent crippling sanctions against key Chinese electronics leaders Huawei and ZTE, that China would read the Washington handwriting or more precisely political graffiti on the Great Wall. As Malaysia’s Mahatir recently stressed in the aftermath of his talks in Beijing about cancellation of billions of dollars of Chinese infrastructure projects in Malaysia “pending thorough review” of the terms agreed by the former Prime Minister, allowing the Chinese to “save face” is major. Washington strategy at present is rather to rip off the Chinese “face,” and to try to replace it with one more to Washington’s liking for vassal client states.

A China-Japan rapprochement

China’s first response was to try to capitalize on the escalating tensions between Washington and the EU over not only trade, but also NATO funding. China first went to propose a form of anti-Washington trade front together with the EU in July. China Prime Minister Li Keqiang proposed cooperation opposing the US trade war actions on both the European Union as well as China, only to get a blunt rejection. Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker bluntly declared he sees “no perspective in the short term” for EU-China talks on a common free trade agreement, noting sarcastically, that “if China wishes to open up it can do so.”

I agree with everything Martyanov says. But I believe my question remains unanswered.
Probably it is my fault. Perhaps I framed the question so sharply that it came across as an attack on Putin’s level-headed policy. Also, my use of the phrase “turning the other cheek” could have implied denigration of Putin rather than my admiration for his level-headedness and humane approach to his great responsibility.
I understand Putin’s policy. I agree with Martyanov that it is the only policy that makes sense. I also agree with Martyanov that the correlation of forces has changed dramatically in Russia’s favor. But to use another phrase, I am concerned about the slip between the cup and the lip. I think something needs to be done to halt Washington’s provocations before they become so extreme that matters get out of hand.
Historically, provocations do tend to get out of hand, more often than not.
Perhaps Russia has prevented, by exposing it in advance, the false flag chemical attack that Washington had in the works in order to have an excuse for another missile attack on Syria, an attack designed by Washington to disrupt Syria’s elimination of the last stronghold of Washington’s proxy army in Syria. That Washington would actually use an obvious false flag chemical incident to attack Syria a second time in defiance of Russia does not indicate that Washington understands that its power is not what it was. I agree with Martyanov that Washington should understand that, but I am not sure Washington does.
