Iranian authorities have detained an agent of Israel’s Mossad among rioters carrying out attacks against security forces in the country, Persian media reported on 5 January.

“An agent affiliated with the Israeli spy service, who was operating … among the rioters, was identified and arrested by security agencies,” a correspondent for the semi-official Tasnim News Agency said.

According to the report, the agent confessed to being recruited by Israeli intelligence.

“On social networks like Instagram and Telegram, they identified people who were active and had likes. They said, ‘Do whatever you want, we want you.’ From the very beginning, they taught me what to do and what not to do,” the detained operative is quoted as saying.

The report adds that investigations showed the individual was part of a currently active spy network, and that more information will be provided later.

Israel’s Mossad has repeatedly infiltrated deep into Iran over the years. During the 12-day Israel–Iran war, Israeli intelligence activated a massive campaign of drone attacks on Iranian air defense sites, carried out by local agents.

Several drone manufacturing facilities were uncovered by authorities at the time.
