Watching Donald Trump’s first 24-hours as President made me think of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western classic, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Let’s start with the good. In sharp contrast to the shambles of his 2017 inauguration, Donald Trump demonstrated he had learned some hard lesson from his first four-year term. He has assembled a cabinet of loyalists who are unlikely to sabotage his agenda. He has a slate of second-and-third-tier officials selected and ready to get to work.
He is culling Biden loyalists from the bureaucracy, including the National Security Council. And he wasted no time cancelling the security clearances of the 51 former intelligence officials who played a key role in pushing the lie that the Hunter Biden laptop was a piece of Russian disinformation on the eve of the 2020 election. He also banned, correctly in my view, John Bolton’s access to classified information.
Trump also did not delay in reaching out to China’s leader, Xi Jinping, and getting a dialogue started. Trump plays a bombastic role in public — it is part of his showmanship schtick — but is the congenial Donald when talking to someone like Xi. That’s good. He also has let Vladimir Putin know he wants to talk.
Trump’s team also entered office with a bevy of Executive Orders. Here is the list of presidential actions Trump signed on Monday following his inauguration:..........more...........
